How can NC better support our small farmers/ranchers? Are more regional processing facilities helpful?

Vicky Allen: At Carolina Grown we work to support local farmers, with regional facilities that help farmers and grocery chains work together in the creation of a distribution network. The issue then becomes production at which point farmers have the opportunity to expand or choose to stay in a more boutique space, which many of our farmers believe lends to higher quality.

Finding the balance between quality, volume and price through consumer demand/desire becomes the art.
Another avenue is through education, using public and private platforms to enhance the consumer knowledge base on the attributes (personal, social, economic, environmental) of eating local.
